Glacial Potholes

Two large potholes carved in rock, view from above. The rock is black, grey and blue. Bright green algae covers the rock in places. Red pine needles litter the scene. Trees and foliage grow around holes filled with bright green still water.

“Glacial Potholes” was taken at Interstate State Park in Taylors Falls, Minnesota. The potholes depicted here are a result of sand and gravel in the melt-water of a glacier. As melt-water seeps through crevasses in glaciers, whirlpools can form. This causes the melt-water to be under very high pressure that leads to the erosion of the underlying rocks.

Interstate state park lies over the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin. It has numerous glacial potholes to observe and is a popular destination for rock climbing.
