Half and Half

A portrait of the High Falls at Grand Portage State Park. The waterfall is full and stands 120 ft. high. The cliffs surrounding the falls are covered in moss. The foliage in the foreground is yellow and green with orange flowers on a cloudy fall day.

“Half and Half” is a portrait of the High Falls at Grand Portage State Park. It is the highest waterfall in the state of Minnesota, and sits on the boarder of Minnesota and Canada. Half of the falls are in Canada, with the left side of the portrait in Minnesota. It’s one of the lesser known trans-national waterfalls in the world. The Grand Portage bypasses this and other unnavigable portions of the Pigeon River. It connects Fort Charlotte with Lake Superior. Between 1731 and 1804, thousands of men shuttled tons of furs and supplies over the portage for trade.
