Hazy Day

Vibrant orange autumn leaves intersect with deep green coniferous tree branches over a shallow, clear lake. The view across the lake is foggy and all you can see in the background is a hint of the tree line on the other side enveloped by white fog.

“Hazy Day” depicts a view of Benson Lake, located at George H. Crosby Manitou State Park in Silver Bay, MN. The juxtaposition of the vibrant autumn leaves against the blurry background of a foggy lake lead me to reflect on nature as a teacher. It’s peaceful, yet dreary; beautiful yet sullen. Foggy mornings are common in the fall on the north shore of Minnesota, and something about the mood echos the often conflicting emotions of the human experience. But even when you only see what’s close up and the future is hazy and far away, there is always beauty to be found if you just look at it from the right perspective.
